Properties and Applications of Sialon

The Sialons were formed as a more economic option to hot-pressed silicon nitride. Since they have combined chemistry, they should be viewed as a family of compounds with a wide range of features. Sialons are formed throughout silicon nitride (Si3N4), aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and aluminium nitride (AlN) respond. The elements blend to form an extensive array of chemical structures. Completely solid polycrystalline figures can be made by without sintering if it supports yttrium oxide that is combined to the compact. This change enables near-net complicated formed segments addressed at an affordable value.

Properties of Sialons:

  • Low density
  • High strength
  • Mechanical fatigue and creep resistance
  • Oxidation resistance
  • Superior thermal shock resistance
  • Moderate wear resistance
  • Fracture toughness

Applications of Sialons:

Just like other silicon nitride-based ceramics, Sialons are currently employed in place exchange applications. Some examples are:
  • Cutting Tools: The thermal density, break toughness and hot shock stability of sufficiently dense Sialon gets it completely adapted to use in cutting devices. The metal is an engaging and affordable option to hot-pressed silicon nitride for machining grey cast iron for automotive purposes.
  • Wear Components: Wear elements utilise the electrical protector, deep warm conductivity, and hot shock stability of the material. Delegate wear applications are accessories for locating and moving metal components throughout the processes such as installation heating or friction welding. Besides the above, Sialons are used in metal forming, seals, and bearings.
